A nearly 24-hour restaurant run by a generous owner

How would you feel if you had written something on the wall of a restaurant while eating noodles with your friends during your teens, and came back to find them again in your forties? A national treasure, or even a world heritage site would not be more moving than that. For those who spent their school days in the Singal area, the noodle restaurant ‘Chonggak Sonkalguksu’ is a nostalgic place. This restaurant has offered discounts to students and free noodle refills since its opening. Although none of the old wall writings remain after the restaurant’s move to its present location in 2006, the clean wall of the new store was soon covered with writing again. Regular customers may have missed the old wall writing and jotted new things on the wall, and a young couple with their child may have added theirs, telling their children that this restaurant holds many memories for them.

Seeing all these scribbles on the walls, you will feel your heart being warmed rather than frown upon them, because they are a symbol of the broad-mindedness and generosity of the owner, who has tolerated these naughty but heartfelt messages that the customers left to celebrate the moments shared with their friends or sweethearts in this restaurant, leaving their names, or "I love you" on the wall. This wall, filled with these writings, preserves the old days of Singal. A bowl of noodle soup you eat today will be remembered on this wall. The natives of this neighborhood who share common memories talk using a phrase familiar only to them: "How about dinner at Chong-kal?" (Chonggak Sonkalguksu)

● The noodle soup us made with anchovy broth and chewy noodles, and comes in large quantities. There are two types of kimchi: less fermented, and fully fermented.

● The restaurant serves only kalguksu (noodle soup) at 5,000 won. Students are provided with a discount of 1,000 won. If you order one bowl per person, unlimited refills are offered for free. However, the discount is not offered to students who visit with their parents.

● The restaurant stays open until 5:00 AM, but does not serve alcohol.
