A quiet noodle restaurant with classical music playing

Introduced in the TV show "Wednesday Food Talk" 


It has been a long while since the road signs were changed. Now Sinbong-ri is Sinbong-dong, and Mabuk-ri is Mabuk-dong. Gogi-ri also became Gogi-dong. However, those who come to visit here still call it "Gogiri". The water of the Gogiri Valley, which springs from the Gwanggyosan and Baegunsan Mountains, is clear and cold despite its low level. The valley is loved by the residents of the nearby Suji area and Dongbaek Apartment Complex, as well as Suwon citizens, who continue to visit here to relax in nature and enjoy the local cuisine.


One of those with lasting fame is Gogiri Jangwon Makguksu, which has been legendary for its high popularity symbolized by a long queue of diners who wait for one or two hours to try a bowl of this makguksu (spicy buckwheat noodles). It has already been a year and a half since this restaurant was introduced on the TV show "Wednesday Food Talk" in a March 2016 episode about buckwheat noodles. Even so, people’s interest in the restaurant continues. No one says, "This restaurant changed after getting famous," and it sails on with no bad reviews.




Inside, this renowned restaurant is much quieter than expected. Perhaps that is one key to its continuing popularity. Whether there are 10 people standing in line outside or 30, the inside is calm. The owner of the restaurant should feel rushed about this long line of customers, but the employees talk in lowered voices and never make loud noises when serving or clearing tables. The episode of "Wednesday Food Talk" in which it was introduced is played repeatedly On the TV screen, but on mute; only soft classical music is heard. Makguksu and classical music! It reflects the wish of the chef for diners to savor his makguksu, as he has put the utmost care into making it.


There are not even bottles of vinegar or mustard on the table. The secret to getting hand pulled buckwheat noodles that are as smooth and chewy as naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) is the fresh buckwheat that is pounded and kneaded several times a day. The noodles are pulled immediately upon order.


If you don’t feel like waiting, think of going at around three in the afternoon when the restaurant is comparatively slower. You can also make a reservation and take a walk around the restaurant or spend time in a café while you wait for the restaurant to inform you of the remaining wait time via KakaoTalk. Gogiri Jangwon Makguksu is not a franchise. It simply uses that name because the first spicy noodle sauce recipe was given to the owner by Jangwon Makguksu in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do.



● The water in which the buckwheat noodles were boiled is served in a kettle. This serves as proof that the restaurant uses only pure buckwheat flour and water for making their makguksu. It has the same plain taste of buckwheat.


● When eating buckwheat noodles with perilla oil, start from the top without mixing and eat about half, then pour cold broth to eat the rest. The servers at the restaurant will also explain in detail how to eat each dish.

● The restaurant's main dish is the makguksu (spicy buckwheat noodles). They are served neatly rolled up in a bun. Mix the sauce with broth on the bottom of the bowl, and turn over the noodles and unroll and blend them with the sauce.
