Yongin_Hankuk Art Museum

A place cherished just for being there

A place cherished just for being there

The road to the Hankuk Art Museum is winds unevenly between multiplex housing units, car repair shops and other buildings standing jaggedly along the streets. You will be wondering if you have lost your way even with your navigation system.

How was this grandly named museum established here? In 1978, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art launched the Association of Modern and Contemporary Art, which is the predecessor of the Hankuk Art Museum today. Kim Yun-sun, the current curator of the museum, has served as executive director since its foundation and in 1983 when it opened an independent museum in Gahoe-dong before moving to its present location in 1994.

What changes has Yongin experienced over the two decades or so since then? The population of Yongin, which was 200,000 in 1994, reached 1 million in 2017. Apartment complexes mushroomed into the city, and the city has become an infamous example of reckless urban development, while the Hankuk Art Museum has stayed there, watching the city.

The museum has been devoted to its core functions of promoting feminism and media art, uncovering and supporting local artists of Yongin, and dealing with local history in various exhibitions, while implementing education programs for locals including a culture and art academy and watercolor classrooms. These are common activities of art museums; however, as a small private museum, it is not easy to regularly open special exhibitions as the Hankuk Art Museum has done. It has held over 200 exhibitions since its opening. Although the museum has neither a nice building designed by famous foreign architects, nor a café, nor trendy artistic products, it deserves to be cherished for just being there, unchanged. If someone asks you, "What's in the Yongin Mabuk area?”, you will be proud to have the Hankuk Art Museum.

● In the grassy front yard of the museum, you can see rows of interesting sculptures. The iron sculptures of a man and a rooster are the works of Jeong Chun-il, and "Mr. Tired" holding a bag is the work of Oh Seung-hyeon.

● A big gentle dog welcomes visitors first. There are also two cats who look so elegant that they could have come out of a picture.
