Yongin_Hyojongdang

A tidy hanok guest house

A tidy hanok guest house found in a forest of apartments

The Dongbaek District of Yongin is a land of apartments. Turning towards Yeongdong Expressway from Baekhyeon Elementary School after driving all the way through these apartments, you will see a dark tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, which you pass through while watching out for cars coming from the opposite side, you will find an underpass, often called "tokkigul" (rabbit burrow) in Korea. Just as Alice, who jumped into a rabbit burrow and reached Wonderland, you encounter another world beyond these two underpasses. A black-tile-roofed house against a backdrop of mountains is seen through tall pine trees. This house is Hyojongdang.

Once you step into the courtyard past a flowerbed of cockscombs and daisies at the entrance, the apartment complexes disappear from view. Only the sound of cars passing through Yeongdong Expressway tells you that you are still in the Yongin of 2017. The hanok house attracts more guests from regions outside of Gyeonggi Province, such as Daegu, Changwon, and Jejudo, as it close to Everland, Korean Folk Museum, and other tourist destinations.

There are three types of rooms, and all are equipped with ondol, a Korean traditional heating system using air heated in the kitchen fireplace (agungi). The very thought of resting on the warm ondol floor on a cold winter day makes you happy. Although the house has a traditional ondol system, the toilet is in western style and located inside the house. You can also use hot water without inconvenience.

If you are not pressed by a busy schedule, you can take a walk in the mountain behind the house. There you can find the Halmisanseong Fortress (Gyeonggi-do Monument No. 215). It is not clear when it was constructed, but according to a tale about an old woman who built this fortress in one night that has been passed down in the area, it is also called "Nogoseong" or "Halmiseong". ("Nogo" and "halmi" mean "hard work" and "grandmother," respectively.) The walk is a half-kilometer long following the ridge of the mountain, taking about an hour to return to the starting point.

● The guest house holds a traditional sauce making hands-on program in early February every year. Participants make soybean paste and soy sauce. The sauces are then fermented in the yard of Hyojongdang, and the participants revisit this house in the fall to take their sauces home. Ingredients used are soybeans cultivated in Baegam, Yongin, and Korean sea salt.

● Recently Hyojongdang has been emerging as a destination for birthday parties and photo shoots. The anchae (inner quarter) is furnished with a hall and items for a doljanchi (first birthday party).
