Haenggung-dong, the Cradle of New Arts

Dream of creating an art space in Haenggung-dong

conceived in an old childhood house

Living near a World Cultural Heritage Site is akin to living in a Green Belt area. People from other regions visit your neighborhood, fascinated by the cultural heritage, but you experience inconveniences, not able to repair your own aged house simply because it is near a cultural property. Alternative Space Noon is a cultural space created in such a neighborhood.

In 2005, Director Kim Jeong-jip created an exhibition space by renovating his childhood house, which his parents had built some 50 years ago. He had a dream of transforming Haenggung-dong into an art village. This dream seemed absurd during those days when abandoned houses and shops were mounting in this area.

But over the past decade, Haenggung-dong has changed a lot. There are mural paintings throughout the village and spaces that provide residence to artists. Since then, enthusiastic young artists have moved to this area. The villagers good with their hands gathered and created a village enterprise called "Haenggung Somssi." All these are the fruits of the seeds that the director of Noon sowed. In 2014, the director demolished the walls behind the house and set up a new space connecting the two houses. This is how Art Space Bom came into being. There are a total of seven exhibition rooms in Alternative Space Noon and Art Space Bom. These spaces, which have been renovated not removing the skeleton of the old houses look a little bit tilted, small, and low, but interesting. The two exhibition spaces select 40 domestic and foreign artists through its year-end public contest each year and open the exhibition of winning works the following year. The exhibition period is for two weeks, but they continuously hold various exhibitions throughout the year except on Mondays and holidays. Art Space Bom also offers a variety of experience activities including wood burning painting, and mosaic wall painting that leave drawings and text on colorful wooden boards.

Bomnoon Cafe is located on the opposite side of the 1st exhibition room of Alternative Space Noon. It is a space where works of art and handicrafts are well harmonized. You can admire the view of a garden covered with a lush lawn and exhibition rooms on the opposite side through a window. The omija tea made by the owner will provide you with a refreshing taste.

Alternative Space Noon decides on the theme of the exhibition to be held the following year based on the results of its annual contest held in November. It invites young and experimental artists from all over the world as well as domestic artists. There are seven exhibition spaces that use the olden day living room, bedrooms and windows. It is open from 11 am to 7 pm and there is no admission fee. It is closed every Monday.

By the window of Bomnoon Cafe, you can see the exhibition spaces of Alternative Space Noon at a glance beyond the lush grassy courtyard. The home-made traditional teas that are served include mulberry juice made from wild mulberries picked from the mountain, jujube tea, ginger tea and omija tea. The proceeds from Bomnoon Cafe are used to fund Alternative Space Noon, where all exhibits are free of charge.
