Ansan_Seongho Park and Seongho Memorial Hall

Park where you can meet Seongho Yi Ik and Danwon Kim Hong-do

Park where you can meet Seongho Yi Ik and Danwon Kim Hong-do,

two great figures of Ansan

Seongho Park extends along an industrial road connecting Suwon and Incheon. It is the largest park in Ansan that spans Bugok-dong, Seongpo-dong and I-dong. You can meet Yi Ik (pen-name: Seongho) and Kim Hong-do (pen-name: Danwon), two of the greatest figures of Ansan in the park area.

This park was named after the pen-name of Yi Ik (1681-1763), a Silhak (Realist School of Confucianism) scholar of Joseon. There is a memorial in the park introducing his life and thoughts. On a hill across the park is the graveyard where he and his two wives are resting.

Seongho Memorial Hall, which opened in 2002, exhibits his artifacts including a copy of his representative book Seongho saseol and the geomungo (six-stringed Korean zither) played by his third elder brother, Yi Seo (pen-name: Okdong). Located in the basement level of the memorial hall, the experiential exhibition room geared towards children is a popular picnic area for kindergarteners and elementary schoolers in the Ansan area. The guides here are dressed up in a white dopo (traditional overcoat) and black belt like Yi Ik in a portrait. The children keep laughing while listening to his fun and interesting commentary. Yi's students described him as "a teacher with a gentle smile like the breeze of spring." So, if Yi met these children, he would have been as kind with them as the guide is.

Next to the Seongho Memorial Hall is the Ansan Botanical Garden. Past the soccer field on the opposite side of the garden, you can see Danwon Sculpture Park. Here, 22 major works of painter Kim Hong-do are reproduced in relief murals. To the west of Seongho Park, across from Suin-ro Road, is Nojeokbong Park, famous for its artificial waterfalls, and Danwon Art Museum. Children who seemed to be five to six years old were playing together on the promenade sparsely lined with sculptures.

"Who wants to run?" Upon hearing their teacher's voice, they started running. They disappeared towards a viaduct leading to Nojeokbong Park, without looking back. Neither Seongho nor Danwon, nor any other great person in history, would shine more brilliantly than those young children.
