Reeds that clean the lake with their entire body

Reeds that clean the lake with their entire body swaying in the wind

Even in the light wind, reeds murmur and sway. The reed marsh, which spreads over a vast area of about 95,000 square meters, does not look like a man-made wetland. However, it is an artificial wetland formed from 1997 to 2005 through a project with a total cost of KRW 33 billion.

When the Sihwa Seawall construction began in 1987, rosy prospects were presented for the ambitious plan to secure the sites of industrial complexes and farmlands here. However, the water quality of Sihwaho Lake sharply deteriorated shortly after the completion of the water seals in 1994. Industrial and domestic wastewater that flowed from nearby areas were discharged to this lake by an average of 7,000 tons per day. Soon, Sihwaho Lake became notorious as the "Lake of Death."

This artificial marsh was created to save Sihwaho Lake. The water running into the lake from the surrounding areas slowly flows through reeds, and pollutants are attached to the reed stalks and roots and decomposed by microorganisms. Reeds and aquatic plants play a vital role as cleaning agents in purifying Sihwaho Lake.

In addition to reeds, cattail and eulalia colonies create a magnificent scenery, and in the pond in front of the Environment and Ecology Center where purified water passes through for the last time, you can observe aquatic plants such as water lilies, floating hearts, Russian irises, and water hyacinths. There are two observation decks for bird watching on the waterfront. Ducks, white herons, and large egrets are among the most common birds. In the middle of the wetland, there is a habitat of otters that were designated as Natural Monument No. 330.

According to an investigation conducted in 2014, 111 species including 11 natural monuments such as mandarin ducks, kestrels, blackfaced spoonbills, and nine endangered species, and a total of 2,929 species are living in this wetland.
