Bread in the shape of a handaxe with blueberry filling

Fold both hands as if praying, and keep your fingertips touching with each other, pull the palms apart until a round space is created between them. Then your hands will be sharp at the end and broadens downward in a triangular shape and narrows again at the bottom. This resembles the Acheulean handaxe found in Jeongok. The shape of this first man-made tool dated about 1.4 million years old feels very familiar. Is it because the tool resembles a human hand?

The handaxe is a symbol of the Jeongok area. Roi Cafe, located on the first floor of the Visitor’s Center in Archaeological Site in Jeongok-ri, sells bread in the shape of a handaxe. It is baked in a loaf pan made by three-dimensionally scanning the handaxe housed in the National Museum of Korea. To make the bread, first, the pan is heated and then dough is put into it. The dough is stuffed with filling containing adlay, which is a specialty of Yeoncheon, and blueberries. The dough is baked for six minutes until it smells pleasantly buttery. The bread taken out of the pan has the same shape as the handaxe. It reproduces even the chipped surface of the handaxe and feels very warm. Plump blueberries burst in the mouth between the moist and sweet bread. Only fertile eggs produced in Yeoncheon are used for the bread.

This bread was awarded the grand prize in the best recipe contest of the Yeoncheon Agricultural and Special Product Market in 2016. You can taste the handaxe bread only here in Korea, no, in the world. It was developed by the CEO of Roi Cafe Seo Seong-cheol, who has engaged in the blueberry processing business. He is also planning to release stuffed dolls in the shape of a handaxe character.
