Yeoncheon_Eundaeriseong Fortress

With Horogoru Embankment, Dangposeong Fortress

Fortress of Goguryeo constructed at a natural strategic point that the three kingdoms competed over

Eundaeriseong Fortress is a 5-minute drive from Jeongok Station. Constructed during the Goguryeo Dynasty, it is at the junction where the Hantangang and Chatangang Rivers meet. Its eastern wall is the only entrance through which we can enter the fortress. The southern wall is built on a perpendicular cliff, and the western and northern walls are surrounded by rivers, making the fortress situated at a natural strategic point. According to Korean history textbooks, Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla fiercely competed over the Hangang River basin in the Three Kingdoms period. In the 5th century, Goguryeo, which had forced Baekje down to Gongju and occupied the Hangang River basin, lost the area to the forces of King Jinheung of Silla in the 6th century. The basins of the Imjingang and Hantangang Rivers, currently administratively belonging to Yeoncheon, were the borders where the soldiers of Goguryeo stood sentry all night during that period.

Goguryeo-style ramparts are made by digging deep into the ground to form a clay layer, on which soil is build up. The inner and outer walls of the ramparts are finished with stones. These kind of ramparts have excellent durability in that they remain strong after more than 1,000 years of its construction. But Eundaeriseong Fortress lost all the traces of the fierce battles where spears and arrows flew. The remaining ramparts on the lower hill have become part of the land. This lonesome fortress has been taken by a group of magpies that fly and perch all together.

The stream running around Eundaeriseong Fortress soon integrates with the Imjingang River. Walking westward along the river, you will reach Dangposeong Fortress and Horogoru Embankment, which were also constructed by Goguryeo. All these three fortresses were built using sedimentary layers formed at the mouth of rivers. The Jangnam-myeon area, where Horogoru Embankment is located, is the point at which the width of the river becomes narrow, like the neck of a gourd. Therefore, the area has been a strategic point that required no boats for crossing the river, except during the rainy season. During the Korean War, the North Korean tank forces also crossed the river here.
