Yeoncheon_Royal Residence

Hotel set up in Yeomgeundang House, a heritage of a fallen royal family

There are many traces left by the fallen dynasties of Korea in Yeoncheon. The traces of the last days of Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon are all gathered in this area. The kings of Silla were buried in a large round tomb near the capital Gyeongju, during the kingdom's golden days. However, King Gyeongsun, the 56th and last king of Silla, was buried in the outskirts of Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do, far away from the capital. Misan-myeon preserves the traces of late Goryeo. It is the Sunguijeonji, the shrine where the memorial tablets of four kings, that is, King Taejo, King Hyeonjong, King Munjong, and King Wonjong, and 16 meritorious subjects are housed. King Taejo, who founded Joseon, built this shrine in honor of the Goryeo Dynasty, but he located it to Yeoncheon, not in Gaeseong, the capital. In addition, the traces of the Joseon Dynasty, which is the last dynasty that has ever ruled the Korean peninsula, can also be found in Yeoncheon.

Royal Residence, a hanok (Korean traditional house) hotel, was set up in Yeomgeundang House, which was once possessed by Yi Geun, the grandson of King Gojong, and was relocated from Myeongnyun-dong, Seoul, to Yeoncheon. The house was built in 1807 and renovated in 1935. Its owner has changed several times and in 1976, Chairman Kim Yong-san of Kukdong Group bought it and used it as a place for VIP reception. In 2008, purchased by the current owner, the house was moved to Yeoncheon. It took a total of three years to relocate the hanok from Seoul to Yeoncheon.

The hotel consists of four hanok, Yeomgeundnag, Hoedeokdang, Sabanjeong, and Jeongangmun, where guests can stay and cabanas, where they can enjoy " glamping." There are also a café, a restaurant and a swimming pool at the hotel. The hanok space is open only to hotel guests. The hotel runs a variety of experience programs such as traditional steam bath therapy, flying wish lanterns, and making herbal medicinal soaps.
