Encounter with art and nature in the Civilian Control Zone

Many of the soldiers we see in cities are those who are on R&R, or others who are dressed in military uniform to participate in reserve forces training after their discharge. It is not uncommon for us, who live in urban areas, to see soldiers who actually perform their duties in preparation for war. We do not know much about the jobs of soldiers, and the terms and tones that they use sounds awkward to us. While South and North Koreas have confronted each other for over 60 years with a border between them, the military has become alienated from those in the rear.

Since the ceasefire in 1953, to enter the Civilian Control Zone in Yeoncheon, all visitors should go through a guard post. In a short moment when sentries check our ID cards and the number of visitors, we leave one reality and enter another. After running through the uninhabited CCZ, we reach the Yeongang Gallery, which was renovated from a building used as a security museum and opened in June 2016. It is the first art space established in the CCZ in 60 years. "Yeongang" is another name for the Imjingang River.

The exterior walls of the building are covered with the work of photographer Han Seong-pil, which was created with the photographs of the columnar joints of the Imjingang and Hantangang River basins. Thanks to this work, the rigid hexahedral building was dressed in clothes fit for a gallery. Did the author try to tell us how human-made barbed wires are evanescent in front of nature that survived for hundreds of thousands of years in this work with the motif of columnar joints? Art makes us ask ourselves about the path that humans should follow in this place where propaganda broadcasts from North Korea resounds competing with the songs of birds.
