Yeoncheon_Driving Along Route 3

National highway No. 3 steeply rises from Namhae of Gyeongsangnam-do to Seoul and extends straight northward after passing the capital, connecting Uijeongbu, Yangju, Dongducheon, and Yeoncheon. It is a strange road where you get to think of a dead end, even while continuing to drive. Until you reach the signpost of the 38th parallel passing by the restaurant at Uijeongbu known as the origin of buddae-jjigae, which was first made with meat and sausage coming from US army troops, and Bosan-dong in Dongducheon where a 23-year poet taught orphans who were "sinners for being born into this world," the weight of the division presses your shoulders.

Yeoncheon, however, tells us not to hastily judge the glory and failure of history. It encourages you not to be saddened by beautiful mountain ridges overlooking military trucks which come and go on the road, showing that the great ramparts that humankind constructed turned into stone piles. Beyond numerous bullet marks, ivy vigorously stretches along the railroad tracks. On this desolate road to the north, the rice colors the fields in a naive yellow.
