Mary Daniel Hobson, Incantation #9, 2018, mixed media collage, 17.8x21.5cm

Journey of Transformation is a photography exhibition featuring Bryant Austin, Mary Daniel Hobson, Minny Lee, and Hendrik Paul. Their journeys to study and capture through their lenses the infinite images of nature, from earth and land, water and ocean, sun and sky to beautiful life forms, are artistic explorations in search of the meaning of our existence and the universe. We invite you on this special journey, to experience the mysterious views of these artists, leading us as humans to quiet growth and new transformation within.

Whatever has life is always changing. Circulation maintained through perpetual breathing in and out, being in homeostasis to sustain oneself, changing in response to the given environment—these are characteristics we use to define the state of living. The efforts to maintain circulation and status quo, the tension and pain in the process of adaptation and change, are events that happen because one is alive.

Bryant Austin, Precession - Half Dome and Sun, 2017 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print, 78.2x130cm

Bryant Austin, Solar Transit of Costal Valley Oak, 2016 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print, 110x73.5cm

The journey of photographer Bryant Austin, through his vertical ascending and descending, requires muscular strength that overcomes gravity. Carrying a heavy backpack, the photographer climbs a rough mountain to face the sun; holding his breath, he dives into deep water to look the whale in the eye. The extreme situations he encounters then unfold before our eyes as portraits of the world, transcending reality.

Hendrik Paul, After the Storm, Cataract Falls, California, 2011, Selenium Toned Gelatin Silver Print, 10x13cm

Hendrik Paul, Dancing Planets, The Sea Ranch, California, 2008, Selenium Toned Gelatin Silver Print, 13x10cm

Hendrik Paul, Solemn Stillness, Santa Cruz, California, 2018, Selenium Toned Gelatin Silver Print, 10x13cm

The photographs of Hendrik Paul are like footsteps left by a traveler on the land. This believer in the order of the physical world, made up of the elements of earth, water, air and light, embraces through photography the great power existing at the center. His black and white photographs, printed from film by physical and chemical processing in a darkroom, are honest, pure crystals of beauty.

Minny Lee, Million Years, 2015 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print, 29.5x44.5cm

Minny Lee, Million Years, 2015 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print, 35.5x23.5cm

Minny Lee, Million Years, 2015 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print 29.5x44.5cm

Minny Lee’s work Million Years is a documentation of the land seen from the sky during a journey moving from West to East. The artist extends her thoughts, floating like air, into infinite time and space through the eyes of a curious earth traveler, and asks fascinating questions as an artist who breathes poetry and images, sometimes like a scholar and sometimes like a scientist.

Mary Daniel Hobson, Regeneration #1, 2016 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print, 40.6x22.8cm

Mary Daniel Hobson, Sanctuary #7, 2008 printed 2018, Archival Inkjet Print, 42x28cm

Mary Daniel Hobson, who captures invisible inner journeys, visualizes the truth that blessings are given through times of darkness and silence. As she quietly commits herself, feather-like messages of inspiration are inscribed on her body. The incantational acts of art become a window for those participating in the calm prayers of light to see another world.

We all walk paths of our own choosing. Each journey of transformation taken on by these four artists is unique, but at the same time all are connected as one. A being that used to be part of an invisible cell forms a human through a microscopic journey, and later returns to the gigantic universe as dust. Travelers who look at the world with their bright eyes and deeply reflect on it while life is with them—these are the guides of art, who invite us to the journey of time and space that flow beyond the bounds of daily life.
