Gapyeong_The Family Zoo of Moring Calm

The first zoo ever for my child

The Family Zoo of Moring Calm is located 1 km from the Garden of Morning Calm. The word, “family”, gives a warm and amiable feel to the zoo.

Opened in 2016, the Family Zoo of Moring Calm is established over an area of 26,000㎡, which makes it relatively small compared to a typical zoo. However, it features not only a neat size for parents to walk around with babies who have just started taking their first steps but also many of the tiny and cute animals with which the kids may interact. As they walk around uttering “woof”, “meow” and “roar,” the children who view the world with a curiosity-filled perspective will surely become friends with the animals here.

The Family Zoo of Moring Calm is constituted of 13 different themes of Herbivorous Safari, Mongwonji Pond, Bear’s Cage, Peacock Village, Babies’ Hill, Garden of Healing, My Little Friends, Animal Kindergarten, Dog Village, and Parrot Village. You may feed the animals yourselves by carrying a basket (sold with a fee) filled with carrots, beef jerky, and hardtack, and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to see everything if you adjust your strides to your child.

More than 100 kinds of animals reside in the zoo, including alpacas, dogs, meerkats, parrots, Asiatic Black Bears, Bengal Tigers, donkeys, Japanese monkeys and chicken, most of which are small and docile, but there is especially a wide variety of dogs that children love.

The most popular animal at the zoo are Bengal Tigers. A male Bengal Tiger named “Dalgu” had lost his companion and been living in solitude until, in 2007, “Bella”, a female Bengal Tiger, was adopted from a zoo in Germany. Upon arrival in Korea, Bella got a new name of “Dalja” and became an official couple of the zoo, overflowing with love. Nicknamed as “Daldal Couple,” they are a lovely couple. Meanwhile, alpacas that are rare in Korean zoos may also be seen here; I cannot help but shout, “how cute!”, by looking at these gentle herbivores. Children also love meerkats that crave carrots with their tiny hands up and the Asiatic Black Bears who are not hesitant to show the shape of a crescent moon on its chest in exchange for hardtacks.

A place of experience where children can meet the animals, which they had only encountered in picture books, face-to-face for the first time to feed them and touch them, The Family Zoo of Moring Calm presents the children an exciting and moving experience of the “first”.
