Pocheon_Giwagol Garden

Giwagol where delicious flowers are in full bloom

I became starving after taking a walk around National Arboretum. Located 5 minutes away by car, Giwagol Garden is a restaurant that has remodeled a 100-year-old hanok. Looking at the trees that wrap the roof tiles and cheongsachorong, or traditional Korean lanterns, hung on the eaves sway back and forth by the wind, I was reminded of the comfort I had felt at the arboretum once again.

The most popular menu at Giwagol Garden is by Sweet Pumpkin with Smoked Cheese. Sweet Pumpkin that looks like orange-colored leaves in full bloom was enough to stimulate my taste buds. As I put grilled duck that holds cheese inside and bean sprouts on perilla leaves and into my mouth, the eyes were slowly closed by themselves. If you want to taste Sweet Pumpkin with Smoked Cheese, you must make a reservation at least 1 hour and 30 minutes beforehand, and it is enough for three people.

A friend of mine who loves to check out good restaurants once said that the proof of a gourmet restaurant is the side dishes as tasty as the main dish. Experiencing it myself, I started to feel like I have heard something like, “a great restaurant is determined by its side dishes”. Changing from one season to the next, neatly prepared side dishes are properly seasoned, neither dull nor salty. Though Giwagol Garden is also famous for Idong Galbi, I believe the hidden gem of the place is Sweet Pumpkin with Smoked Cheese.

As my stomach was quickly becoming stuffed, I put down the spoon to take a look around. The natural scent and tranquil atmosphere exuded from hanok made me feel as if I have become a yangban, or a nobleperson. After the meal, I came out to the broad front yard and found several toys placed throughout for children. For kids who come with their parents, the adults’ seemingly endless chatters may pose as an unbearable wait but a small playground at Giwagol Garden serves to soothe their feelings. It definitely reveals a thoughtful consideration of the owner who turns boredom into excitement for children.

I encountered the flowers that I was not able to fully see and enjoy at the arboretum where spring is about to begin.
