Waste rock’s bright shining moment

Located on the hillside of Cheonjusan Mountain, Pocheon Art Valley is a wonderful culture and art space recreated by using once-neglected waste rock. The path from the entrance to the park is extremely steep so it is recommended to use the monorail. After you get off the monorail, you find Sanmaru Performance Hall where cultural and arts performances of various genres are held on weekends and holidays from April to October every year. If you travel a bit further from the performing stage, there is an Astronomical Science Center, which features various exhibits including the astronomical observatory that may be viewed without paying an additional fee as it is included in the admission price.

Sky Park of Hope

The main attraction of Pocheon Art Valley for many would probably be Cheonjuho Lake. Cheonjuho was originally formed as spring water flowed into a puddle, which had been created from quarrying of granite, and the water has an emerald color, a reflection of granite soils deposited at the bottom of the lake. My camera shutter was working ceaselessly in the presence of Cheonjuho lake’s amazing scenery. It was a weekday but many foreign tourists were there to take photos and make precious memories by the lake. If you follow the steps located on the side of Cheonjuho Lake, “Sky Park of Hope” greets you over an enormous sculpted gate. Cheonjuho and the entire Art Valley can be seen in a panoramic view from Sky park, which features a “Slow Postbox” and a countless number of wish cards hanging on the walls near the rest area. Being so close to the sky, I felt as if any of my wishes would come true. I walked down the path filled with royal azaleas and discovered sculpted artwork made of granite.

Under the scorching sun, I became quite thirsty after even a short walk so I stopped by the observatory café to have a cold drink. I became astounded by a granite wall behind the lake performing stage facing the café. The grandeur of a 50m-high vertical granite walls and the beauty of clean water from Cheonjuho lake flowing below the stage paint a marvelous picture. Lastly, remember to check out media façade performances for which diverse lighting and videos are played at the performing stage on every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
