Namyangju_Leepatong Chicken

100% handmade chicken cooked with passion

Leepatong Chicken is already a well-known spot for people who live in Guri and Namyangju. When they suggest to go for some chicken and beer, they are referring to Leepatong, which is also where those who have met for a hiking club or an alumni dinner go for one last drink before they are dismissed in front of Deokso Station. It is also a good place to choose if it is difficult to decide where to meet with a friend; all you need to say is, “Let’s meet at Leepatong in front of Deokso Station!”

The reason that Leepatong Chicken has been consistently loved by many is the philosophy of the owner, Mr. Park Gi-ok, who believes, “Food shall be faithful to the basic principles.” By this, he refers to the process known as yeomji during which fat smell and other unnecessary smells are eliminated to bring out the flavor of the meat itself. Because this process requires much work and attention, most stores buy and cook with “chicken that has gone through yeomji”. Leepatong Chicken, however, performs the entire process from yeomji on raw chicken to seasoning in order to make 100% handmade chicken. The skin of Leepatong Chicken has a bit darker color than the yellowish look for “typical chicken,” and this stems from seasoning and aging with more than 20 ground ingredients including turmeric, garlic, and onions. Also, after steaming twice in a pressure cooker and oil-frying once, the chicken’s skin is crispy while the inside is juicy and tender.

Mr. Park always researches on new flavors and passionately develops the menu, which features unique dishes to which his ceaseless thinking is reflected, from fruit salad chicken, Ganban Yangban and cream onion chicken to Chicken Baengi and fruit chicken. But most regulars of Leepatong order simply by saying, “1 Tongbaengi Chicken!” or “1 Tong Chicken, please!”

If you order a chicken at Leepatong, “chives seasoned with a special sauce” is also provided by Mr. Park who wants his customers to eat it with dry chicken breast. His consideration for the customers can also be seen from the list of draft beers. A variety of inexpensive craft beers is available for customer to choose based on their preferences, and thus the stereotype that “there is just a single kind of craft beer at chicken restaurants” is broken.

On my way out of the building after a delicious chicken and beer, Mr. Park sings a song called “Leepatong Song” for which he wrote the addictive lyrics that still remains in my memory.

“Let’s go to Leepatong with a friend today.”

TIP.

When regulars who are full cannot finish the chicken breast, “chicken rice” can be made by mixing the sweet and spicy sauce and the rice with the leftover chicken breast meat. Though it is a secret dish that is not even on the menu and only the regulars know of, many of them are compelled to visit again just to experience the unforgettable taste of the chicken rice.
