Namyangju_Daleum Cafe

Relaxation and solace of countryside found at a greenery cafe

Famous as a "pretty cafe in Namyangju," Daleum Cafe has toy cars for children parked in the broad front yard. In contrast to a recent trend of "No Kids Zones," the scene of kids cheerfully running around the cafe seems almost strange.

The owner couple of Daleum Cafe, Mr. Sohn Dong-hyun and Mrs. Park Hye-jin, said that they had thought of a cafe to which parents can accompany their children from the beginning.

"We enjoy visiting different cafes but there are not many cafes to which we can bring our children, let alone spaces for kids to lie down or rest with their legs extended."

As they focused on how to design a cafe for both the children and the mother to have a relaxing time, the thought naturally led to a "floor-sitting cafe". The floor-sitting areas at Daleum Cafe are divided with partitions for families, friends and couples to spend a cozy time together, and the setup has made the cafe extremely popular especially on weekends when people need to wait in line before they are seated.

An outhouse is located next to the main building of Daleum Cafe. It used to be a greenhouse, but the plants withered and died one by one due to severely cold weather. Eventually, the area was filled again with small and cute succulent plants, and the building began to be called "Byeolchae." Thanks to its wider seats than those of the main building, visitors in large groups often prefer Byeolchae.

Based on their long-time experience in running a cafe in Guri, the owners are quite keen on understanding the customers' needs. From menu development and self-roasting to the owner's unique and definite style of interior, elements of their know-how can be found in different corners of Daleum Cafe. Even when a large throng of customers visit at once, their roles are naturally decided even in the midst of such busyness. Mrs. Park is primarily responsible for coffee and brunch menus while Mr. Sohn roasts coffee beans and makes soufflé pancakes.

When I asked them how they would want Daleum Cafe to be remembered by its customers, they answered with a smile.

"Namyangju is quite close to Seoul so we would want people to feel the vibe of the countryside, somewhere a bit away from the city center. As people become more comfortable, relaxing and stable when they visit the countryside, we would love Daleum Cafe to be that kind of a place."
