Namyangju_Mongolian Cultural Town

Trip to Mongolia encountered in Namyangju

"If you go to Mongolia, a pitch black night sky is inset with bright stars. The air is so clean that those stars seem to shower down and fall gently upon my face."

Grasslands, deserts, and the galaxy... If you are an avid traveler, you probably have dreamed of visiting Mongolia once in your life. Despite a relatively close distance from Korea, however, the reality is that it is difficult to obtain materials and data on Mongolia, whether it be travel, history, or arts.

That is why I was ecstatic to hear that there is Mongolian Cultural Town in Namyangju where the performances, lifestyle, culture, food, and history of the Mongol people can all be experienced in one location!

"But why is Mongolian Cultural Town in Namyangju?"

In 1998, The city of Namyangju signed a friendly cooperation agreement with Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia and opened the first Mongolian Cultural Town in Korea in April 2000.

At Folk Exhibition Hall, more than 800 pieces of artifacts and items of 500 different kinds are on display, including Mongolian living tools, hunting equipment, traditional clothing, instruments, and handicraft. The Mongolian ecosystem is viewed at the Ecology Exhibition Hall while the history of Mongolia can be compared to that of Korea at the History Hall while also learning about the leadership and activities of Genghis Khan. In addition to the exhibits, various experiences are available for you to try on Mongolian traditional clothes, make a ger or play horseshoe throws and archery, which are a couple of the popular traditional plays of the country.

The highlight of Mongolia Culture Town is "Mongolia horseback performance" and "folk arts performance" by artists who have been selected in Mongolia as a part of an agreement made with the city of Ulaanbaatar and Mongolia Arts Center.

The "Mongolia horseback performance" features the main event of a person and a horse united to perform dangerous-looking horseback circus as well as a dancing horse, horseback riding techniques (Zigit and Ziprak Show), aerial circus, and archery. The “folk arts performance” features an orchestra of traditional instruments, humming, dancing and handicrafts, traditional singing and shamanism performance.

In front of Mongolian Cultural Town, there is a Mongolian restaurant named “Genghis Khan” that sells lamb chops and lamb meat, which are traditional Mongolian dishes. Delicious Mongolian food after enjoying the Mongolian Cultural Town is a perfect ending to a day trip to Mongolia.

Mongolian Cultural Town is the nation’s one and only cultural amusement park with the theme of Mongolia and its history, culture and arts that are difficult to encounter in our daily lives. If you wish to take a trip to Mongolia right now, go to Namyangju, instead, where Mongolia exists.
