Yangpyeong_Gudun Station (Closed)

A temporary station still delivering dreams, love, and hope

“Hello, this is Kim Young-hwan, the guardian of Gudun Station.” When I called the station for a report, the person on the other end of the line introduced himself in a proud manner. I thought Gudun Station, which was constructed in 1939 during the Japanese colonial era and served as the feet of many people, was closed as a part of Jungang Line’s double-track subway project, but there is a guardian at the station?

Guardian Kim enjoys train trips and used to love sitting in the very back of the train car. He remembered the beautiful appearance of Gudun Station and was sad to see it left unattended after its closure in 2012. Then, on December 2, 2016, he leased the station and decided to establish an unforgettable space for people, aiming at “recycling” and preservation instead of new creation and construction. While maintaining old traces of wooden benches, ticket window and train timetable in the waiting room, colorful stories were added to a beautiful location of Gudun Station. For people who visit from far away to have a pleasant and relaxing time, a café called “Kkamong’s” has also opened to offer snacks and beverages.

At Gudun Station, Kkamong (cat), Kkakkung (cat) and Monggu (dog) are with Mr. Kim and his wife. These animals also participate in various cultural programs held at the station including an appearance as main characters in a musical, <Fantasy Express: Secret Time Travel>, that finds the meaning of time and introduces culture spaces at Gudun Station. Many different cultural programs are set to be offered this year as well, including a new experience learning called <Gudun Station: Magic School> through which people can learn magic and enjoy the station space to its fullest.

At Gudun Station, golden tickets of wishes are hung on the wish tree, which is at least several hundred years old. They are the hearts yearning for someone’s success, love, and good health. There must have been a person who wrote a wish for many people to visit the station, because Gudun Station achieved the feat of being selected as one of “Yangpyeong 10 Views” in 2017. The number of visitors has increased as more people learned and found out that it still contains the beauty of the past. There are many cases of friends who have visited the place together and become couples, proving that the station is where hope and love come true.

Golden tickets of wishes

A temporary station remembers all who come and go every day and whom its meets. Gudun Station is no different; it grew with the joys and sorrows that had taken place in the waiting room and platform. Though Gudun Station has since retired after many years of service, many people still write their own stories here and the station, in turn, will continue to witness our joys and sorrows.
