Paju_Mimesis Art Museum

A poetic space painted by dots, lines, planes and light

Anyone who enters the gardens and faces the art museum would stand there for a while. Where does it start and where does it end? The outer walls of the art museum stretch in an elegant curvature without boundaries of the earth, sky, left or right. Established by a publishing company named Open Books, the art museum was designed by a Portuguese architect named Álvaro Siza, also known as a poet of architecture. Even he who has won numerous awards in architecture called it one of his greatest works as he stepped into the completed museum.

Living up to his nickname, Álvaro Siza has created the venue into a three-dimensional, multi-faceted place through simple dots, line, and planes. For the white-colored exhibition space constituted of various curved surfaces, artificial lighting was avoided as much as possible and, instead, natural light is allowed in to express a subdued and calm atmosphere. The lights, which change continuously, attract the audience as much as the exhibited works, thus adding a new dimension of excitement. As it is affected by season and light, the closing time varies from one season to another so I recommend you to check the operating hours prior to a visit.

At the café and Book & Art Shop located on the 1st floor, books published by Mimesis, an arts literature brand of Open Books, are sold at discounted prices. Here, you may purchase book in various areas including biographies or essays that vividly depict artists’ spirits, books on architecture and graphic novels, and there are also books on display for you to read so you can sit at the café to leisurely read the books and buy them at the spot, if you desire. In addition, the museum hosts education sessions and lectures that combine architecture, arts, and humanities, sufficiently fulfilling its role as a cultural space. Dates for newly scheduled exhibits and various programs may be checked on the website.
