DO PRINT! 60 YEARS OF KOREAN CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING

2018-07-04 ~ 2018-09-09 / DO PRINT! - 60 YEARS OF KOREAN CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING

Choi Eunju,

Director of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art

Celebrating the 60th year of Korean contemporary printmaking in 2018, the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, in conjunction with the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association, has opened the exhibition, “Do Print! 60 Years of Korean Contemporary Printmaking.” Introducing representative works by 120 artists, the exhibition aims to provide an overview of trends in Korean contemporary printmaking and the future of printmaking. From various works utilizing such diverse printing methods as woodblock, copperplate, lithography, and dry point, to recent experimental tendencies showing the almost limitless possibilities of printmaking, visitors to the museum will surely appreciate the artistic accomplishments of Korean contemporary printmaking.

Through this exhibition the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art also aims to provide artists with a place of atelier for printmaking, which has declined due to the changing times and various circumstantial elements, and to raise interest among the general public. We also hope that this event will provide an opportunity for young print artists to be discovered and recognized.

Some of the works submitted to the exhibition “Do Print! 60 Years of Korean Contemporary Printmaking” will be owned by the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in line with the artists’ wish to donate them to the museum. This is significant in that, of 160 works, some 40 excellent print works of art have now joined the permanent collection of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art. We at the museum would like to express our gratitude for the artists’ generous donation.

This exhibition owes a great deal to a number of special supporters filled with a great passion for printmaking, especially senior printmakers who are living witnesses of Korean contemporary art. As such, we would like to express our deepest thanks to Kim Choungza, Suh Seungwon, and Youn Myeungro, who were inaugural members of the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association in 1968, as well as to Kim Bongtae, Kim Yongsik, Han Unsung, Hong Yoon, the Kim Nae Hyeon Art Gallery and the Kimdaljin Art Archives and Museum among others.

Finally, this exhibition would not have been possible without the wholehearted help and support of Shin Jangsik, chairman of the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association, Park Younggeun and Lee Seoungku, vice chairmen, Na Kwangho, manager of general affairs, Lee Eynjin, research fellow, as well as the artists who have observed with deep affection the printmaking world, their families and, last but not least, all the employees of the museum. Thank you once again.
