DO PRINT! AT THE GYEONGGI MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

2018-07-04 ~ 2018-09-09 / DO PRINT! - 60 YEARS OF KOREAN CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING

Shin Jangsik

Chairman of the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association

The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art is proud to present the exhibition “Do Print! 60 Years of Korean Contemporary Printmaking.” Jointly organized by the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association, which has led the establishment and dissemination of printmaking in Korea, and the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, the event commemorates sixty years of Korean contemporary printmaking.

The exhibition introduces the trend of Korean contemporary printmaking from new perspectives through the works of 120 printmakers who represent the history of Korean contemporary printmaking, and aims to predict the future direction of printmaking in Korea. The exhibition is particularly meaningful in that it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association.

With its unique sensibility and highly aesthetic quality, Korean contemporary printmaking has infinite potential. Printmaking has been adopted as a medium of expression by many artists throughout Korean contemporary art history, while contemporary printmaking in particular has continued to stimulate experimentalism. That man has always engaged in the basic activity of drawing, whether using a material for printing, a computer, laser cutting, or through new media and so forth, all are the same in the view of new artistic expressions. The fact of the matter is that man cannot not draw. Thus, the four main methods of printmaking will never disappear, but are likely to evolve toward new artistic territories. As if to prove that point, these days we are seeing printmaking of art combining the latest media; while Korean contemporary printmaking is creating new modes of expression by reflecting the spirit of the times and fusing new media. Even the newest ideas of the twenty-first century are being expressed through the medium of printmaking. Such trends only confirm that artists have infinitely expanded the scop.of their artworks through printmaking.

Evidently, Korea is a kingdom of printmaking whose most historic and important works range from the Tripitaka Koreana made during the Goryeo dynasty to the advancement of woodblock printing culture during the Joseon dynasty. Expressing Korean beauty, creating new aesthetics, and disseminating Korean aesthetics to the wider world through contemporary printmaking have not only been important in the past but will be in the future, too. As such, we at the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association expect to witness the continuous development and dissemination of Korean contemporary printmaking.

Lastly, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation for their great support in making this exhibition possible, and to all the participating artists and supporters who have provided us with many valuable materials.
