DO PRINT! THE VARIATIONS FOR IMAGERY AND CONCEPTS

2018-07-04 ~ 2018-09-09 / DO PRINT! - 60 YEARS OF KOREAN CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING

Kang Minji

Curator of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art

2018 marks the 60th year since contemporary printmaking began to flourish and prosper in Korea. Although records of prints made from personal interest or taste dating back to the early 1900s have been discovered, it is generally held that the foundation in 1958 of the Korean Printmaking Association, a collective art movement with printmaking as the medium, saw the birth of Korean contemporary printmaking. To commemorate this 60th anniversary, the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association, which has led the establishment and dissemination of Korean contemporary printmaking since its inception, has organized this exhibition in order to shed light on the trends, tendencies and possibilities of print art.

The exhibition titled Do Print! 60 Years of Korean Contemporary Printmaking focuses on the process of realizing images through diverse methods of printmaking. The exhibition aims to examine how effectively each act of engraving, corroding, penetrating, or experimenting with a plate reflects the artist’s psychological state and the phenomena of modern society.

Through this exhibition, viewers will see that print artists have continued to expand the breadth of their art using print media, starting from the art world of the first-generation artists of Korean contemporary printmaking, who worked tirelessly to develop and revive Korean contemporary printmaking, to the new ideas created in this era of digital reproduction. A wide range of works based on diverse researches on materials, methods and contexts, will serve as a key to estimate the infinite possibilities of Korean contemporary printmaking in the future.

It would be unfair for a participating artist to classify this genre of art as printmaking or him or herself as a printmaker, and the definition of printmaking does not seem so important, as it only maximizes the mental imagery of an artist and a concept. Viewers will see t xpression and to vary the categorization of their works, rather than the concept of genre. Divided into five sections, the exhibition presents the sensibility and aesthetic values of printmaking.

During the Korean contemporary art history of the twentieth century, printmaking has been the chosen medium of many artists seeking to stimulate their spirit of experimentation, and it has accordingly come to occupy an important position as a springboard to the international stage. This exhibition ― which highlights the representative works of 120 artists who, together, have created 60 years of printmaking history in one place ― will be a rare opportunity for viewers to view another aspect of Korean contemporary art history through printmaking.

As images and their meanings are multiplying into infinity today, printmaking, with its three characteristics of multiplicity, indirectness and uniqueness, is regarded as the most contemporary media that faithfully reflects the generational context. This is maximized when combined with digital media, which has made “reproduction without the original” possible. Such aspects of changeability of print art completed by engraving, corroding, drawing, penetrating and experimenting, can be seen in the 160 magnificent print works on display at the current exhibition. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to artists Kim Yongsik, Youn Myeungro, and Han Unsung, Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association, and lastly, the Director Choi Eunju, Chief Curator Park Uchan, and all colleagues at the museum.
