Celebrating 2020 new year, the GyeongGi Museum of Modern Art of the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation (MoMA, Director: Ahn Mihee) held the children's mural unveiling event at the graduation ceremony of the Gapa Elementary School, the southernmost elementary school, on Monday, January 6.

The project, started with the installation of the children's mural at the 2008 Art Museum by artist Ik-joong Kang and the GyeongGi MoMA, has become a program for installing a children's mural at the southernmost elementary school in 2020. The children's mural installed at Gapa Elementary School’s Mara Branch School, the southernmost elementary school in 2010, was relocated from Mara Branch School, which could not enroll students and was thus discontinued.

Artist Ik-joong Kang and GyeongGi MoMA visited Gapa Elementary School on November 25, 2019 and held a dream-drawing activity with children to produce a children's mural to be installed in the school. Also, the GyeongGi MoMA held activities to collect the dreams of Gyeonggi-do’s children, who visited the GyeongGi MoMA from December 21 to 22, 2019. Seventy Gyeonggi-do children participated in this activity.

The children's mural installed at Gapa Elementary School this time are square artworks of 120cm, width and height. Drawings by current Gapa Elementary School students, drawings by children of Mara Branch School and Daesungdong Elementary School who participated in children's mural installed at Mara Branch School in 2010, as well as paintings by current Gyeonggi-do children, have been installed together. The sketch of the mural is the Moon Jar by artist Ik-joong Kang. A Moon Jar is a traditional piece of pottery made by attaching the top and the bottom, in which the artist saw the reunification of South and North Korea. This painting embroidered the children’s dream on a moon jar, made with a desire for peace.

The children’s mural unveiling event at Gapa Elementary School was held in line with the 2020 Gapa Elementary School graduation ceremony. The unveiling ceremony was held with the commencement to congratulate some of the school children who visited the 2018 GyeongGi MoMA graduating that day.

The children's mural project ‘50,000 Windows, Wall of Future', led by artist Ik-joong Kang and GyeongGi MoMA for 12 years, will continue into the future. It will be a great example of a project that the art museum continues, and shares with the region and participants of all classes.

Please check the website of GMoMA for details.
