Honoring our great national independence activists in Russia

Honoring our great national independence activists
in Russia

Celebrating the 101st Provisional Government Organization and the 30th year of diplomatic ties between Korea and Russia

○ Gyeonggi-do and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation are designed to build monuments for Lee Donghwi, the first Prime Minister of the Provisional Government, and other nameless national independence activists in Vladivostok

○ This is a natural succession to the national independence movement, a peace movement in northeast Asia designed to usher in a new future, encourage Korean national identity and increase pride in the Maritime Province.

Gyeonggi-do and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation will finish building monuments for Seongjae Lee Donghwi (1873~1935), the first Prime Minister of the Provisional Government, and nameless national independence activists who were active in the Maritime Province near the Pokrovskiy Park in Vladivostok, by August this year.

This project was made possible at the suggestion of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vladivostok. Gyeonggi-do and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation promoted this project to re-examine the anti-Japan movement in the far East and continue the national independence movement as a peace movement for northeast Asia, a legacy for the future and not just the past, while celebrating the 101st anniversary of the Provisional Government (April 11) and the 30th year of Korea-Russia diplomatic ties. Gyeonggi-do expects that this will help encourage Korean identity and pride.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi-do and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation will take charge of collaboration among national institutions and acquire a budget, while the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vladivostok will ensure local support, such as from the city government, as well as other overseas organizations. The government of Vladivostok has offered land to build the monuments.

On the 25th of last month, the plan to establish ‘monuments for Lee Donghwi and other nameless national independence activists’ was passed by the Committee of Construction and Culture of Vladivostok. As the monuments are completed, they will be listed as overseas memorial facilities by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. At the same time, the Vladivostok Korea Education Institution will be in charge of the local site management.

Shin Myungsup, Head of the Peace Cooperation Bureau of Gyeonggi-do said, “the construction of the monuments is very meaningful, in that we can permanently mark the sacrifice and contribution of the many national independence activists whose activism was prominent in the Maritime Province,” and went on, “we will ensure that the national independence movement develops into and becomes part of a broader peace movement.”

Lee Donghwi was born in Dancheon, Hamgyeongnam-do. In 1913 he left for the Maritime Province, Russia, and organized the Government of the Korean Restoration Army to build military forces. In 1919, he became the country’s first prime minister under the provisional government and passed away in 1935 in Vladivostok, without being able to celebrate the national independence that came 10 years later. In 1995, the government offered the Order of the President for National Foundation to Lee Donghwi to laud his commitment and prominent role in the national independence movement.

Lee Jae-myung, governor of Gyeonggi-do, in his commemorative address on March 1st last month, stressed, “We must help this county respect and honor those who have sacrificed for the country and their communities”.
