Gyeonggi-do witnessed more than 1,500 abandoned dogs find new families through the Gyeonggi-do Assistance Dog Center. It is the first good news in 14 months since the 1,000th dog, called Bambi, was adopted on February 16, 2019 and some 7 years after the 1st dog, called Kong, was adopted in November, 2013.

Adopted as the 1,500th dog, the main character Geumgang is an adorable mix. Geumgang was raised in an Abandoned Animal Shelter before the dog was selected on the 2nd of April, to stay at the Gyeonggi-do Assistance Dog Center. The sociable Geumgang, with special affection from the staff of the center and visitors, was finally adopted into a new family in Uiwang-si, on April 27.

Ms. Baek Seol-ah said, after adopting Geumgang, “I trusted the center, where they took care of the dog by testing it for diseases and giving it vaccines, along with basic training, before finding it a home"

As the abandoned animal shelter and adoption agency directly run by Gyeonggi-do, ‘the Gyeonggi-do Assistance Dog Center’ opened in Mado-myeon, Hwaseong-si in 2013. This center selects sociable abandoned dogs being cared for by the metropolitan and provincial care facilities to undergo procedures: treatment, training, disease prevention; and then it rehomes these dogs to local residents, free of charge. Some of the selected dogs are trained as animal-assisted activity therapists to be adopted by social workers, or animal-assisted activity professionals.

All of the companion dogs institutionalized in the Gyeonggi-do Assistance Dog Center have veterinarians and trainers in charge. This center gives education and training to caregivers before adopting pets, and it always provides, through call enquiry, counseling services to inform adopters about diseases and the training of companion animals, even after adopting pets.

In last December, a ‘Temporary Care System’ was introduced for those who want to adopt dogs but are worried about problems with allergies or who have a lack of confidence. Those who intend to adopt dogs through this system are required to undergo a grace period to confirm the adoption for two weeks. In case a dog under temporary care has a problem adapting, the dog can be sent back to the assistance dog center within two weeks.

Lee Eun-gyeong, the manager of Animal Protection Division, said, “The number of adopted dogs under the care of the Gyeonggi-do Assistance Dog Center has exceeded 1,500. This means that the adoption culture of abandoned dogs has almost been established in Gyeonggi-do.” She added, “I would continue to show leadership in promoting animal protection, by reinforcing the adoption culture of abandoned dog, and basic 'petiquette'.”

If you want to either adopt or explore the world of needy dogs, visit the Gyeonggi-do Assistance Dog Center (181-15, Madogongdan-ro 1-gil, Mado-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do), call (+82-31-8008-6721~6) or visit the internet café (cafe.daum.net/helpdogs) to ask questions.
