Gyeonggi Studies Magazine Spring 2020 (No. 4)

will be published soon!

Writer: Lee Jihun, Director of the Center for Gyeonggi Studies

In 2020, we welcome another new spring. To become an important communication base for regional studies in Gyeonggi, last summer the Center published a quarterly, named Gyeonggi Studies Magazine. Gyeonggi-do first appeared in history in the Goryeo Dynasty and has maintained itself as the center of the country for 1,000 years. Through many upheavals, its people have always embraced the values of ‘innovation’, ‘opening’, ‘integration’ and ‘inclusion’. However, at the same time, Gyeonggi-do has failed to show genuinely unique characteristics as a ‘local entity’, washed by the tides of localization, under the local government system. Its vague image as a hinterland-metropolitan area of Seoul hindered development and establishment of a local identity, and we have failed to establish a coherent community, and this has continued for a long time. Little by little, as the local government system is established, we find recent attempts to explore local values and cultures. Based on all of this, the importance of the locality and its communities has been recognized and the interest in ‘regional studies’ has grown, as a base for future development. Gyeonggi Studies Magazine will enable all of this, as well as efforts to mobilize on site and ensure communication. Spontaneous participation of everyone interested in the region/locality is desired.

Gyeonggi Studies Magazine’s current issue <Village & History> introduces two stone chamber villages in Namyangju-si where the Andong Kim ruled in ‘Traditional Villages’. You can see all of the village characteristics, where the power of the Andong Kim in the late Joseon Dynasty can be explored. Also, ‘Village Recycling” covers Eobi-ri, Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, while ‘Novel Sites’ provide fun stories of multi-cultural streets in Wongok-dong, Ansan.

<People & Life> features the life of Lee Younggeuk, a native of Goyang and old Suwon. Images were gathered from Kim Younghoe. We can listen to the life and dreams of Han Sanggu (resident of Yeoju), a porcelain maker, who wishes to make a masterpiece which will last one thousand years. Also, we can walk with Yoon Sora (resident of Gwangmyeong), a dubbing artist.

<Trip & Healing> covers Siheung-si, a marine city famous for the most beautiful setting sun in the western sea and a vast mud flat that you can experience. Also, you can enjoy the spring in Jaenmal, Wonsam-myeon in Yongin, Yeongnam-gil, Gyeonggi Yet-gil (Gyeonggi old paths). In this area, you can find pasqueflower, flowering plum, Chinese violet crass, oriental bush cherry and azalea. Such sights stimulate our hidden emotions.

Additionally, <Information & News> covers Patriotic Songs at Anglo-Korean School in Gaeseong, the 1919 Independence Movement, the six main roads of Joseon Dynasty, Gyeonggi Yet-gil, and the exploration of Daerosa Confucian Shrine with Uam Song Si-yeol; <Column & study> includes Gyeonggi Studies Column (joy and pain of local/regional studies), an old document (from the Yoos of Jinju, Bugok, Ansan-si), Archaeology News (Haengju Sanseong Fortress) and an argument (administrative changes of Gyeonggi-do).

『Gyeonggi Studies Magazine』, which was published for the first time in 2019, is a quarterly magazine published by GyeongGi Cultural Foundation, Gyeonggi Studies Center. The original texts of 『Gyeonggi Studies Magazine』 can be freely used by everyone at Gyeonggi-do Cyber Library.
