The Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art is holding the 11th Youngeun Creative Studio, Leeda's 'Il Leung Sway' exhibition from July 18th to August 9th. In one work, numerous ideas and concerns of the artist are piled up. Artist Leeda defines the outer world of the painting on a flat canvas and the inner world as something that has layers inside, and the point where it meets is called a boundary/surface. Artist Leeda is trying various materials and methods to show this through own works and exhibition activities. The biggest characteristic of the medium of painting is that it is flat and superficial. However, there are countless layers of physical and psychological layers in it. Showing the boundary/surface is the work of showing it out of the canvas. In this exhibition, Leeda can see many changes in materials and colors compared to his previous works. The material used previously was an industrial material used for exterior painting of automobiles. Industrial materials have a sense of weight compared to general art materials, and as a result, they have tactile properties with a sparkling feeling. With this characteristic, visitors were able to feel the tactile side while looking at a flat painting according to the point of view and the location of the work. The artist goes beyond showing the boundaries/surfaces using materials and their physical properties, and this time presents a work on visual illusions arising from the act of looking. The works in the exhibition hall are acrylic paints, which are a perfect art material, and the colors are also brighter and more colorful than before. Although there have been dramatic changes in materials and colors, what the artist still pays attention to and focuses on showing the boundary/surface. However, this time, it is not the sense of touch with the eyes, but the illusion of the act of looking.

The artist uses an airbrush to draw dense sketches. These drawings, influenced by the surroundings, air, and emotions at the time of work, are different in each work. After drawing the sketch, a thin, regular white line is added on it, as if deleting the drawing. Paradoxically, this repetitive and simple erasing act provides a fluctuating visual effect on the viewer's view of the work. This sense of space on the plane that the viewers' feelings are an illusion that recognizes that it is a plane again the moment they get closer to the work, but it succeeds in creating a “plan with depth.” Meanwhile, in this exhibition, industrial materials and art materials are halved. You can also see works that have been mixed in. These works are made by grinding the matiere of the surface formed by applying a thick layer of urethane paint and acrylic paint on the canvas back into a flat surface. The goal was to create the “depth plane” that the artist consistently pursues. As a result, layers with different shapes and colors can be seen on the canvas plane, such as the cross section of the stratum. As a result, although it is flat, it produced the effect of showing the depth of it. This exhibition shows the boundaries/surfaces in various ways, without losing the unique characteristics of paintings, drawing and flatness. It will be an exhibition that you can meet.
