A bistro run by a competent chef

No disappointments with rustic interior design A bistro run by a competent chef

Viewing an art gallery can require a good amount of energy. Even a leisurely tour makes you feel hungry at some point. You feel even hungrier after thinking hard while looking at contemporary artworks that puzzle you. If you walk down the slope from the Nam June Paik Art Center and turn the corner, you will find Nolita across the street. It is an Italian restaurant that serves pasta and pizza, but is located between a convenience store and a grocery store, situated more like a rustic Korean noodle restaurant.

You may be a bit surprised when you first go inside. With a shabby interior design and somewhat dim lighting, the walls are full of bowls and kitchen utensils, and the few tables there are already full. People are engrossed in their meals, clinking their forks and spoons against their plates, not even turning an eye to new diners. You will feel as if you stepped into a secret club that only a few people know.

The most popular menu in Nolita is the Bianco di Mare. A generous portion of seafood such as mussels, crab, clam, and flying fish roe blended with cream sauce are laid atop soft bread and noodles soaked in the sauce. The cream sauce is moderately spicy, seasoned with Korean hot peppers and pepperoncini, so the dish does not feel too oily. Taking a bite of bread moist with the lightly spiced sauce, you will understand why the menu has the option to "add cream sauce."

Nolita's dishes are the work of Chef Jeong Seok-won. He worked for Nolita's Ewha Womans University and Gangnam locations, which are fairly well-known in Seoul. There is no major interior element in the restaurant, but is a good place to taste authentic Italian cuisine.
