Sleeping Forest Is Waking Up
Atelier in the forest where art, life and nature become one
When there are no visitors to a building, it gets easily worn out. It was in 2003 that Seoul National University College of Agriculture left the building and in 2014, even the Rural Development Administration located across from it moved to Jeonju. Since then, the Seodun-dong area has long been asleep. On the days when the streets are empty, the area feels lonesome. This uninhabited space represents a simplicity that has accepted the passage of time without any resistance, an innocence that seeks no exception. It is a beauty of ruins that you cannot find anywhere else. Here, it feels like you may reunite with something that you have forgotten in your busy life. It feels like something that you have unknowingly longed for awaits for you here.
The place referred to as "Seonong" or "Nongdae," which stand for Seoul National University College of Agriculture, by the locals, was given a new name: Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus. The empty building became crowded once again by artists and young creators who have built their nests here. Programs have been operating for both children and grown-ups to learn new things or enjoy a leisurely time. On weekends, more people visit here for the free markets and small festivals held in the forest.
The building is reminiscent of the giant who alienated himself from the world in a story written by Oscar Wilde. He finally destroyed the high walls that he had built by himself and invited kids to his garden, but he might have felt awkward at first, not knowing how to treat them. He might have just smiled, at a loss what to say. Like the garden of the giant, Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus opened its doors wide to the world. The merry laughter of children resounds throughout the whole forest, waking up the building that has slept for a long time.

● The building "Living 1980” (former Agriculture and Horticulture Building) where the Gyeonggi Living Culture Center is situated has a library/ playground for children under 13 on the first floor.
● On the fourth Saturdays from spring to autumn, a market is held in the forest. Handicrafts produced by the resident groups of the Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus are sold and various performances and activities are offered for visitors.
● The buildings "Youth 1981" (former Agricultural Chemistry Building) and "Work 1967” (Agricultural Work Building) are spaces for young people engaging in culture and arts.
● There are many places to relax and meeting points throughout the campus area.
