Reenactment of King Jeongjo's Procession to His Father's Tomb about 220 years ago

Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival

Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival held every October

"I am the son of Crown Prince Sado." King Jeongjo, the twenty-second ruler of Joseon, visited Hyeollyungwon, where his father's tomb was located, a total of thirteen times over a period of eleven years from 1789 when he built Hwaseong Fortress. The procession to the tomb was a grand event that spanned 59.2 kilometers from Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul to Yungneung Royal Tomb at Hwaseong Fortress through Anyang and Suwon. The king and his party crossed over a bridge made by connecting 36 boats from Nodeulseom Island of the Hangang River. The pontoon bridge designed by great scholar Jeong Yak-yong was 20 meters wide and 300 meters long.

The procession of the Eulmyo Year of 1795 attended by King Jeongjo's mother, Crown Princess Hong, who celebrated her 60th birthday in that year, was especially magnificent among the 13 processions in total. Since 1996, Suwon has been reenacted this procession according to the records of Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongni uigwe (Record of King Jeongjo's Visit to His Father's Tomb in 1795). From 2017 onward, all the governments of the cities in the procession route including Seoul, Anyang, and Hwaseong will participate in the event to restore the entire process.

In this event, the costumes and food used in the procession and all the rituals are faithfully reproduced. During this large-scale event that involves 4,500 people and 690 horses, various events including the main parade and martial arts performances are held along with the reenactment of the national tests supervised by King Jeongjo, and the 60th birthday party for Crown Princess Hong.
