Traditional markets transformed into the youth’s favorite destinations

Traditional markets transformed into the youth’s favorite destinations

with the popularity of food trucks

What did the citizens of the new town built by the king look like to the eyes of the residents of the neighboring areas? Suwon and its citizens might have looked so sophisticated and cold that they found it hard to address, that they started to call the natives of Suwon "the shrewd Suwon people," considering them stingier than the merchants of Gaeseong. Then how are the citizens of Suwon living today, in this city remaining as an unfulfilled dream of King Jeongjo?

Traditional markets are concentrated around the Southern Sluice of the Suwon Stream: Yeongdong Market, which was formed by Jeongjo at the time of the construction of Hwaseong Fortress; Jidong Market famous for sundae (Korean sausage) and grilled tripe; Motgol Market where the merchant community broadcasts their own radio show; Minarigwang Market which is famous for high-quality red peppers; and Paldalmun Market where you can find various shops specializing in a wide variety of goods. The second floor of a mall in Yeongdong Market is a space for young creators who dream of starting a business. In the 28 Youth Market, you can visit shops and studios where design goods are made and sold.

There are also many restaurants serving a variety of food including Water Parsley Bread, Doremi Pasta and Moon Rabbit's Snack Bar.

By 5 o'clock, food trucks arrive one by one on the pedestrian road on both sides of the bridge in front of the southern sluice. They are so popular among citizens that long lines of diners start to form up while the trucks are still preparing for the opening. Here, you can enjoy various kinds of dishes including spicy sushi, grilled pork and shrimp with coconut cream.

Across Yeongdong Market is an exhibition zone that introduces the history of Suwon's traditional market. At its entrance, the statue of King Jeongjo sits in front of a table with drinks. "Bulchwimugwi (No one can go home unless they get drunk)", the expression that the king used at a banquet that he granted to the engineers who participated in the construction of Hwaseong Fortress is engraved on the statue.

● The restaurant Taiwanese Night Market and the food truck owned by entertainer Cao Lu that were introduced in TV shows are always crowded with diners. Oppacha serves steaks with pork neck, and Holiday Pasta provides various kinds of pasta at KRW 5,000. They are so popular that there are queues of people in front of them even on weekdays. This food street is full of unfamiliar but appetizing dishes such as Brazilian dumplings and beef sushi.

● The 28 Youth Market located on the second floor of a shopping mall of Yeongdong Market has 28 stores operated by Suwon's youth. There are restaurants and cafes serving snacks and beverages like Water Parsley Bread and Moon Rabbit's Snack Bar among studios where you can experience dancheong painting, metal craft and pottery making, as well as buy related goods. The mall is also equipped with interesting facilities such as walls for scribbling and restrooms with mirrors in the shape of glasses, entertaining visitors.
