Ansan_Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art

The Way Art Embraces the World

Kind museum breathing with locals

A big boat with a glass sail. When you enter the Hwarang Recreation Area, what you first see is the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, which sits on an extensive grass field. The low and heavy rectangular building with a crescent-shaped translucent glass plate on it simply looks like a sailing boat. It is moored here for a while before going out to the West Sea through the Hwarang Lake and the Hwarangcheon Stream behind the building. It is clear that the architect tried to express Ansan, a city facing the sea, as well as the large lake around the museum.

In Ansan, which is famous for its wide green area, Hwarang Recreation Park is one of the most popular parks. When the weather is nice, it is crowded with people who come out for a picnic. The museum, situated in the middle of the park, sometimes provides shade to rest for avoiding the sunlight, and sometimes becomes a pavilion for sharing a cup of tea. The museum speaks to those asking for a resting place in a kind and friendly voice. Special exhibitions such as "Easy Modern Art" and "Rest," G-Museum School, and exhibition space for children, "Kkumteul," are the programs geared towards the public to help them feel more familiar with modern art.

After April 2014 when the Sewol Ferry sank carrying the students of nearby Danwon High School, what visitors to Hwarang Recreation Park first see is the group memorial altar for the victims, not the museum. It has quietly watched Ansan citizens and the entire Korean people grieve. The museum held the memorial exhibition "April the Eternal Voyage" on the second anniversary of the accident. On the wall of the entrance to the exhibition hall, Kang Ik-jung's mural Wall of Hope was installed in remembrance of the victims. Even if life is sometimes full of sorrow, you cannot give up your future. In the Gyeonggi Museum of Art, you will find how art can embrace and heal the wounded world.

The Gyeonggi Museum of Art stands on a large site of 30,000 square meters. Thirty-three pieces of sculptures are on display in the lawn at the front and back of the museum. There are many eye-catching works including Yu Yeong-ho's Greeting Man sculpture of a man bowing and Choe Gi-chang's Drainage Canals that carved meaningful phrases on the drainage canals surrounding the museum.
