Curry and nan tasting like home

Curry and nan tasting like home

that warms the landscape of Ansan Multicultural District

Exiting from Ansan Station of Subway Line 4 and looking across the street, you can see buildings with multiple stories that have signs representing different countries and regions. Yanbian, Russia, Nepal, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and so on. These countries stand in rows and layers regardless of their positions on the map in the Multicultural District of Wongok-dong in Ansan, which is often called the "District without Borders." It has been introduced by media as a unique tourist destination with restaurants specializing in dishes from different countries.

Truly, twisted bread sticks and flower buns bigger than a fist sold by a robust Chinese young man, tropical fruit such as durians and papayas displayed on street stalls create an exotic atmosphere here. However, to romanticize this scenery, the life is too difficult for these foreigners who left their home countries to survive. You can easily find large signs reading "Document Agency for International Divorce" or "Document Agency for Family Visas."

It is not difficult to find Kantipur, a restaurant specializing in Indian and Nepalese dishes. The restaurant is on the second floor of a building standing on the first intersection that you will encounter after entering the Multicultural District located across Ansan Station. On a wall next to the counter of the restaurant is filled with letter of appointments from various public agencies including the city hall, tax office and industrial disaster hospital of Ansan. Each of these letters is like a path that the owner took in Korean society.

Kantipur serves Indian dishes such as tandoori chicken, curry, nan, and lassi and Nepalese noodle soup. They do not have strong flavors so you can easily enjoy them. As the restaurant is always on Ansan's list of the best restaurants in the Multicultural District and has been introduced many times on SNS, it attracts not only foreigners but also many Koreans. If you visit the district for the first time, it is a good place to start from.

In the 1980s, Ansan was an industrial city. This city was better known under the name Banwol Industrial Complex and Siheung Industrial Complex than Ansan. People from all over the country came to the city to get a job. Ansan is now a place attracting job seekers not just from across Korea, but across Asia. That is why the multicultural district was created in Wongok-dong. Now the complexes are referred to as "smart hubs."
