Yongin_ghgm (good hand good mind)

A café where wood speaks to you

Where wood is reborn into furniture

A café where wood speaks to you

‘ghgm’ is in Dongcheon-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin. The two-lane road running in parallel with the Songokcheon Stream is always quiet in this area, only dotted sparsely with small factories and warehouses. The ghgm building, a white warehouse with a simple white signboard, stands between them. As you entering the building, you can see old woodworking tools hanging on the left wall that represent the identity of this company. gmgh (an abbreviation of "good hand good mind") is a furniture company run by "skillful and hearty" carpenters. It also operates a café on the first floor of this building and a gallery on the second. gmgh was established in 2015 by photographer and carpenter Joe Nam-ryong, and now has grown into a company.

In the café, huge wooden boards several times taller than an adult are leaning against a wall. If you look closely, you will find labels attached to the boards to classify the wood type as oak, ash, walnut, and so on. These imposing wooden boards catch your eye no matter where you sit in the café.

These are the heroes of this cafe. Leaning against the wall, waiting to be born again as furniture, these pre-processed wooden boards look back on their life. And then they start to speak to you. Look at my growth rings, look at my bent body, look at my scars. ghgm carpenters want the characteristics of each kind of wood to be expressed in the furniture and interior items that they make. They open up this space to customers who visit here to buy furniture, or just to have a cup of tea, so that they can look closely at the wood boards, listen to their stories, and talk with them.

The reporter feels the texture of the wooden table on which the cup is placed, and thinks about the process in which a tree grows before becoming a piece of furniture. This cafe offers valuable time to reflect on forests and labor while viewing and using furniture.

● Wood and iron create a good combination. Iron stand lamps, vintage chairs, and old bicycles give a rhythm to the wooden interior.

● The second-floor has a ㄷ-shaped structure. Past a desk cluttered with tools that seems to have just been occupied by a carpenter, you can see a variety of furniture such as desks, chairs, and beds made by ghgm.

● A space where you would want to spend time alone looking out the window, reading, or knitting.
