Yeoncheon_Typhoon Observatory

Observatory located only 1,600 meters from the North Korean guard point,

where you can see North Korean residents on a clear day

Yeoncheon has several observatories where you can view North Korea along the Southern Limit Line. Among them are Sangseung Observatory where the First Tunnel was found, Seungjeon OP that was used by North Korean armed agents as a path to infiltrate into South Korea, and Key Observatory built by the Key Division (5th Infantry Division). Among them, Typhoon Observatory, located on the Suribong Peak of Bikkisan Mountain, is famous for being closest to North Korea. It is situated at 860 meters from the ceasefire line, and only 1,600 meters to the North Korean guard point. You can see North Korean residents with the naked eye on a clear day.

There are several monuments related to the Korean War standing on the observatory. In particular, the weight of the word "valor" resonates with our hearts more heavily in front of the monument for the unarmed soldiers who threw themselves into North Korean tanks to block them, and for the boy tank crews consisting of middle school students who voluntarily joined the military. The war imposed such a great sacrifice on everyone.

Photography is strictly forbidden on the observatory. Of particular note, it is not allowed to lift a camera toward North Korea. It is to maintain the confidentiality of the South Korean military and not to provoke the North. Inside the Typhoon Observatory, Korean daily necessities and the equipment used by North Korean armed spies to infiltrate South Korea are on display. Since its establishment in December 1991, over one million people have visited it thus far. They all saw and felt here how close North Korea is and how far it is, at the same time, that they could not even take a picture of it.
