Yangju_Hoeamsa Temple Site

Site that we must introduce to the world

No one knows exactly when Hoeamsa Temple was constructed. The reason that Hoeamsa Temple was could be rebuilt into such a gigantic size of today is active sponsorship of the royal family in the late Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasty and the fact that it was where renowned monks who led the Buddhist circle at the time stayed. Annual excavating investigations since 1997 and up to the most recent 11th investigation have uncovered valuable artifacts such as roof tiles or porcelain used only by royal families and from which the characteristics of the royal court and the Buddhist culture could be studied. Recognized of its importance, it was designated as National Historic Site No. 128. Hoeamsa Temple is estimated to have been lost due to a fire set by Confucian scholars sometime between 1566 and 1595.

Hoeamsaji Museum

Hoeamsaji maze

It is recommended that, before checking out Hoeamsa Temple Site, you visit the museum to first see what kind of relics were discovered at the place. The value of Hoeamsa Temple Site lies in not only its site and artifacts but also the history and greatness, and it is currently under review to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage. Once you exit the museum, there is a maze, which is made of waste roof tile pieces that were excavated at the site. You must pass the OX quiz question written at the fork inside to escape the maze, which offers small excitement and learning at the same time

At the entrance of Hoeamsa Temple Site, you will be overwhelmed by its enormous scale. If you go up to the observation deck to observe different corners one by one, it will take more than 20 minutes from the entrance to exit. If you walk up to the observation deck via a paved road where Stupa of Buddhist Monk Muhak is, you will be able to look down upon Hoeamsa Temple Site in a relatively short amount of time. My jaw cannot help but drop at the grandiose sight under Cheonbosan Mountain in its surroundings.
