Yangju_777 Residence

[Secretive but compelled to introduce]

It is not easy to show other people your desk that you have been too busy to organize or your space that has been left as it was for continuation of a task. You also feel an irony of sorts as you have a place that you want to keep only to yourself but, on the other hand, you still desire to let someone in.

777 Residence personal studios

777 Residence was born to provide a creation space for artists currently active in various fields including photograph, video, painting, installation, and complex media. It remodeled a closed motel and transformed seven rooms on different floors into their personal studios. Through contests in 2017 and 2018, 12 artists were chosen for residence. Once an artist is selected for residence here, a gallery on the 3rd floor where exhibits may be hosted as well as a work studio are provided. Through a critic matching program, meetings with critics whom they cannot easily encounter are also held. After a year of residence, an artist must receive an extension review by his/her work to be able to use the studio for 2 years. The works that the artists have exhibited throughout a year are compiled to publish an archives book, and he or she is given a privilege to continue to store the works at the facility even after the contract is terminated and the artist leaves 777 Residence.

Artist Chun Ju-yeon personal exhibition

Right now (as of mid-May), a personal exhibition, titled <Tickling, Stirring, Hitting and Twisting>, by Artist Chun Ju-yeon is on-going. The artist uses the items such as its exhibition title to compete against texts and displays behaviors to stir up the text world through installation art and videos.

On the lobby wall of the 1st floor, a map that shows work studios of different artists residing in 777 Residence is shown. The 1st and 2nd floors are also utilized as a culture and life center for Yangju residents while the 3rd floor is run as a gallery whose admission is free whenever there is an exhibit. Normally, the 4th floor and above restrict entry of the general public but there is one occasion during which the artists’ space grants access; it is during “Open Studio,” the biggest event at 777 Residence when the creation spaces of the artists are open for communication with the audience. It plans to be held in late August or late September this year and various programs are currently under preparation.
