Little station where people, not trains, stop by to rest

The heyday of Neungnae Railroad Station was from the 1970s to the 1980s. Amidst the locals here for a picnic on the sandy shores of the Namhangang River with their lunch boxes, the yelling of ice cream vendors would resound, "Come and get some delicious ice cream!" With the construction of Paldang Dam, the sandy shore disappeared, and people stopped coming to this place. There was no longer any reason to use Neungnae Station, so by bus or by car, they just passed on by. On December 29, 2008, before the beginning of the New Year, the station was closed down. It was then that the closing was made official, but there had been no passenger transport for over a year already.

However, Neungnae station is visited by more people these days than in the past, even though no more trains stop here. It was the locals who revived this old railroad station. They painted murals on the sides of the station and set up squeaking wooden benches. The notices and railway timetables of the olden days were also put on walls, with the pictures that the locals took near the station when they were young.

Today, people come to the station by bike, not by train. Since the creation of a two-lane cycle path next to the railway in 2012, Neungnae Station has become a popular destination for cyclists. They can get the stamp of the Korea Bike Tour Path here. Bike rentals are also available at a nearby shop.

In cafes near Neungnae Station, the most preferred tables have a fine view of the station. People have a good time taking pictures of the abandoned railway. Inside the station, a stovepipe alone hangs on a wall. A stovepipe without a stove can be held precious sometimes, as a station without trains can be.
