Goyang_Seosamneung Royal Tombs

Where the rise and fall of Joseon Dynasty is buried

I enter through an exotic path with grass fields on both sides. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring and maple trees color the autumn to appeal as a date course for couples. At the end of this path, the entrance to Seosamneung Royal Tombs appears.

Historic Site No. 200 that has also been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage, Seosamneung Royal Tombs refers to the three royal tombs of Hyoreung, Huireung and Yereung. The site became royal tombs when Huireung, the tomb of Queen Janggyeong, the second wife of King Jungjong, was established. Hyoreung is the tomb of King Injong and Queen Inseong while Yereung is where King Cheoljong and Queen Cheorin are buried. In addition, there are three royal tombs of crown princes, which are Sogyeongwon, Uiryeongwon and Hyochangwon, and 45 graves of Joseon’s royal concubines, princes, and princesses including Hoemyo Tomb of the deposed Queen Yun and the grave of Prince Imperial Uihwa.

The royal families of Joseon did not burn the umbilical cords of babies and, instead, buried them in places with great scenery and divine topography. However, Placenta Chamber of umbilical cords for 54 members of Joseon’s royal families are here at Seosamneung Royal Tombs. The reason that the royal umbilical cords, which must have been buried in propitious mountains and sites around the country, are all buried here is worries over damage and defamation they may have faced due to Japan’s policies to annihilate our culture. The tragic history of our country on a decline is buried where tombs of Joseon’s royal families are preserved.

Currently, Hyoreung Royal Tombs, Sogyeongwon Royal Tomb and Placenta Chamber are not open to public and only Huireung Royal Tombs, Yereung Royal Tombs, Hyochangwon Royal Tomb, and Uiryeongwon Royal Tomb may be accessed.
