Pocheon_Bidulginang Falls

Mystic and glorious

A cave that holds clean, emerald-colored water on which a shadow is cast was enough to stimulate my imaginations. I closed my eyes for a second. I could play a scene in my head in which brilliantly shining bluebirds fly around while a mermaid wearing rainbow-colored scales enjoys swimming and disappears fleetingly in the absence of people. It would not have surprised me if the imagined spectacle unfolded in front of me when I opened my eyes.

In the old times, white pigeons, or bidulgi in Korean, lived inside the cave behind the waterfall over a hollow cliff that resembled a pigeon’s nest, which is where the name, “Bidulginang Falls,” is originated from. You are in awe as you walk down the stairs below columnar joints towards the waterfall. Highly regarded for its gorgeous landscape, Bidulginang Falls was created by lava plateau of Hantangang River and has formed one of the largest fluvial erosion caves in Hantangang River. Also, it was designated as the National Monument No. 537 and has been protected after being recognized of its academic and educational value for understanding of the geological and geographical formation process in Yeoncheon region due to volcanic activities.

Bidulginang Falls exudes magical charms from a harmony of clean and blue water, cave, fluid canyon, etc. and was, thus, chosen as a filming site for a number of popular TV shows and movies such as “Queen Seondeok,” “The Slave Hunters,” and “A Werewolf Boy.” At 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM and 3 PM on every Saturday and Sunday, you can go on an exploration of the waterfall with a geology commentator. Near the waterfall, there are also geology parks on Imjingang River and Hantangang River as well as Bidulginang Camping Site where relaxing strolls and special memories can be made amidst the nature and a well-established landscape.

The colors and atmospheres of the waterfall that change according to the time of the day made me impossible to leave the place. Once night arrives at the waterfall, it seems like fireflies with lights in various colors would visit to light up the cave. Although I had to unwillingly leave because of my next appointment, I want to visit again on a cozy day to experience again the glory of Bidulginang Falls.
