Cheerfully reminiscing the days of my youth
Do you know the days of 7080?
Nickel silver lunch boxes were placed on top of a hot stove seated at the center of every classroom, young boys and girls went on blind dates at a bakery over a basketful of cream breads, and children were dragged by their mothers into public bathhouses while the government enforced curfews and censorship for women’s skirt lengths and long-haired male disc jockeys at a café played the tunes I requested.
Retro Museum located in the tourist area of Yongmunsan Mountain, Yangpyeong has perfectly reproduced the elements of the 1970s from memorable stores, streets of my town, beloved train station and old bathhouse to the parade of the youth, buzz-cut school days, youthful theater and café. A single item brings out a series of memories from the past
It was an ordinary life back then, but it has become a rarity now. The audience who could save with their eyes the scenes that they had only had in their memories takes an ample amount of photos.
Retro Museum is a retro experience art gallery opened in the Yongmunsan Resort in Yangpyeong by Trick Eye Museum, which is why its themes are retro and illusionistic art. At Retro Museum, there are numerous spaces specifically for those who wish to reminisce the past through photos. Employees recommend places that are great to pictures at and become models themselves in front of the camera while photos of their best poses are posted on walls. Seemingly real sounds of feces inspections are heard, and bottles of Yangpyeong’s own makgeolli brand, “Jipyeongsaeng Makgeolli,” are on display in the pub; these are only a couple examples of delicately reproduced spaces that stimulate the visitors’ senses.
There are often cases of young people who once came with friends visiting again with their parents who then also bring their colleagues for a re-visit. Though it is not possible to go back in time, it is possible to take a memorable time travel. Retro Museum allows active viewing through various events such as dancing in school clothes, participating in singing contests or writing letters by hand.
Recently, graduating students from Yangpyeong’s Yukmun Middle School visited here to take graduation album pictures. They are not the 7080 generation but they will remember this day in a few decades. Retro Museum creates new memories.
